Attrition– Wear or loss of tooth structure, often from grinding or clenching of teeth, is called attrition. This condition is often caused by stress. The enamel of the tooth eventually wears away and the tooth becomes prone to chipping. This can lead to the need for root canal treatment or TMJ disorder if not diagnosed and treated early. Generally, a mouth guard worn at night can prevent the teeth from making contact and can last 1-2 years before being replaced.

Cracked Tooth Syndrome– Often occurs in teeth that have been filled and is due to weakening of the remaining tooth structure by decay. Hairline fractures can occur at the corner of the filling, leading to the development of cracks. Some people respond to stress by grinding their teeth (bruxism). This can lead to cracking in filled or unfilled teeth. If untreated, the crack will spread (like a crack in your car windshield) and the tooth can break off or, the crack will reach the root/nerve chamber. Aggravated nerves can cause sensitivity to heat/cold and chewing. The result can be pain and the potential need for root canal treatment or extraction.

Fractured front teeth are unsightly. The broken teeth are uneven and have a negative effect on your appearance. Depending on how large the fracture, there are several restorative options. Sometimes bonding will restore small fractures or slightly chipped teeth. For larger fractures or broken teeth, porcelain is usually the best option to restore and strengthen the teeth. Before jumping into treatment, however, our doctors first want to know why your teeth are breaking.
